Morristown,
Tennessee
Students in grades 4 and
5 participated in the math trail at Manley Elementary School. Each class read a book about Davy
Crockett. We also talked about life in
pioneer times. In Morristown, a replica
of the original Crockett Tavern can be toured in the summer months. Davy Crockett lived in the tavern as a young
boy. He is a legendary figure in the
history of Tennessee. The students
discussed the many possibilities of using math in the pioneer days to solve
problems. They worked very hard and did
a wonderful job.
I would like to thank Mrs. Mitchell, Mrs. Tullock, Mrs.
Kragel, and Mrs. Smith for their cooperation and patience in completing this
project. I am a student in college and
worked at Manley Elementary School as part of a program called America
Counts. This was a fun project designed
to help the students understand how math can be used outside of the
classroom. It also gave me a new
understanding of how valuable and dedicated teachers are. I never realized the amount of effort
required to plan and teach a group of students.
Thanks
Again
