STATION 3

MATERIALS NEEDED:

Ruler

Growth chart or tape measure

Paper replica of bear paw print

Paper

Pencil

Calculator

Instructions: Students will determine the height of the bear buy using equivalent fractions, or ratios.  They will measure their height and use the number as the denominator. They will then measure their foot and use it as numerator. Next the students will measure their bear print and use this as the numerator of the equivalent fraction. They should be able to figure out the denominator or height of the bear.  Some measurements may be hard to figure out by hand so they may use a calculator.  All measurements should be in inches.  Round the measurements to whole numbers.

(Student’s foot measurement)       X          (Bear Print measurement)

(Student’s height measurement)                (?)

                    10     X   16            10 (?) = 896

56                            (?)           896/10 = 89.6  =  This bear is 89.6 inches tall.

Davy told the man of his wish to go home and Mr. Dunn agreed to let Davy go with him he told Davy to be at the Inn by sun- up the next morning or he would leave him. Davy traveled in a blinding snowstorm for seven miles to get to the Inn. He made this trip in only 2 hours. How fast was Davy traveling?

Answers:  1.  5.00/400 = .0125 cents per mile

2.     7/2 = 3.5 miles per hour

3.     36.00/6 = $6.00 per month

4.     105/52 = 2 remainder 1   Davy killed 3 bears one week and 2 every other week of the year.

Facts From the Book Davy Crockett Young Pioneer by Laurence Santrey.

In the year 1790, Davy was 4-years old.  He got into trouble for being in the woods by himself after spotting a big bear.

When Davy was almost 8-years old, the Crocketts moved to Cove Creek, Tennessee, where Mr. Crockett bought a piece of land right next to the creek.  The family wanted to build a mill on the creek.

About 1 year later the spring rains washed away the mill.  Davy and his family left Cove Creek forever.  They moved to an inn on the road that went from Abingdon, Virginia to Knoxville, Tennessee.

At 12-years old, a farmer, Mr. Siler, hired Davy to help move his herd of cattle from Tennessee to Virginia.

At last in the spring of 1802, Davy met a man willing to take him on his wagon back to Tennessee.

In the summer of 1802, Davy worked for a local schoolteacher on his farm.  This time he asked for food, a place to stay, and schooling.  He studied for six months, learning to read, write, and do some arithmetic.

Davy served as an officer in the Citizen’s army of Tennessee, under General Andrew Jackson in the War of 1812.

Davy served as a member of the United States Congress.

On March 5, 1836, Davy died along with other brave defenders of the Alamo.  He was 49-years old.

Figure out the Temperature by counting the chirps of a cricket.

Materials needed

Cricket

Thermometer

Stopwatch

Math Formula

Paper

Pencil

Instructions:  Count chirps of cricket for 15 seconds.  Use mathematical formula to figure temperature.

Fahrenheit- Take the number of chirps you heard in 15 seconds and add 40.

Celsius- Take the number of chirps you heard in 15 seconds.  Add 5.  Then multiply the sum by 5.  Then divide your answer by 9.

Answer:  Most students heard 38 chirps in 15 seconds.

                38+40 = 78 degrees Fahrenheit

                38+5 =42  42x5=210  210/9=23.3333 degrees Celsius
