North School 4th graders in Miss Lesak's math class broke
up into small groups at three different times throughout the school year to
practice working in groups.
Students studied their school, their town of Villa Park, and its
inhabitants. First, students worked in flexible groups to write a letter requesting
numerical information of a place of business in town to create and solve a
problem. The second problem students engaged in were measurement problems using
measurements of things found in and around the school. The third problem the
students completed was a study of Villa Park's most recent census count to
study the people surrounding them. The following problems are the first
problems groups completed.
