NEC Foundation of America
Helps Fund National Math Trail’s Third Year
A generous grant from the NEC Foundation
of America is enabling the National Math Trail to broaden its usage
as a tool for all teachers who wish to enhance their technology skills and to
bring a real world context to their teaching.
NEC Foundation of America joins the Department of Education, which funds
the project as a Star Schools initiative through SERC
(the Satellite Education Resources Consortium).
The
project, which is in its third year, has helped a swiftly increasing number of
K-12 educators add a new dimension to teaching mathematics. Hosted by The Futures Channel, the National
Math Trail utilizes the Worldwide Web to allow teachers and students across the
US, and throughout the world, to share the mathematics that exists in their
communities. It has been a source of inspiration and information for the
thousands of teachers who visit the site to mine its unique collection of
community-based math problems.
NEC
Foundation of America awards grants in science and technology education and to
support the application of technology to assist people with disabilities. “Technology is an equalizer,”
reads the NEC Foundation of America’s website. “It enables people to improve
their abilities and to assert and fully develop their potential. Our goal is to
assure that individuals have the skills to continue to advance the boundaries
of technology on both a personal and societal level.
“Today’s
high school students will lead society to overcome barriers to communication,
be they barriers imposed by distance, time, language or physical condition.
Today’s investment in the scientific and technical education of young people
represents an investment in the 21st century.”
