Vermillion's Math Trail

Hello and welcome to our math trail made by the 5th grade at St. John the Baptist Catholic School. We’ll be showing you many things in Vermillion, MN and telling you some of its history. We’ve been making this math trail a long time and worked very hard. We hope you like it.

*You may want a calculator to complete some of these problems.

Your first stop will be at our school playground.

PLAY GROUND
History:  Kids have played on this playground for many years. Three years ago the parking lot was part of the playground.

.

Problem: There are 3 recesses each day. I watched the monkey bars for one day. About 7 kids went on them that day. About how many went on the monkey bars in 12 recesses?

Solution: About 28 kids

Explanation: 12 recesses would take 4 days. 7 kids times those 4 days=28 kids

7x4=28

Directions to next site: Take a right and go to Stein Haus.

The Stein Haus

History: The Stein Haus use to serve smoked pork chops, sausage, meatballs, sauerkraut, potato salad, buns, relishes, and many more. Now, there is a fish fry on Friday Nights.

Problem: I went to the Stein Haus on Saturday and saw cars by the restaurant. There were three vans and nine cars. There were about five people in each van, and each car had about three people in it. About how many people were at the Stein Haus?

Solution: about 42 people

Explanation: First you take the nine cars and times them by three, because that is how many people are in each car. Next the three vans are filled with about five people in each van. So take the three vans and times it by five. Finally add the number of people in cars and vans to get the answer.

9x3=27

3x5=15

27 +15=42 people

Directions to the next site: Go east past the City Hall and past the bank to Werner’s Implement.

Warner’s Implement

History: It started on January 1, 1948. The owner was John W. Warner. In 1961 he retried and Ernest Werner owned it for a few years and gave it to the whole family. The family now owns it. They go to school for tractor repair, and they have won many awards.

Problem: 6 tractors were in front of Warner’s. The costs for the tractors are $4, $46, $150, $23,600, and $89,000. What are the range, mean, median, and mode of the tractor prices?
Solution: Range: $88,996.00,  Mean: $112,800, Median: $150, Mode: none

Explanation: This is a range, mean, median, and mode problem. How to get range is to subtract the highest number $89,000 and lowest number $4 to get $88,996.00. How to get the mean is add all numbers $4, $46, $150, $23,600, and  $89,000 to get $112,800. Then you need to divide it by 5 to get the mean of $22,560. The median is the middle number $150. The mode is if there is the number that appears the most. There is no mode in this problem.

To the next site: Take a right to the Grain Elevator.

Grain Elevator

History: They started building a new elevator in 1978. It sold grain, wheat, and corn, and it still does.

Problem: The elevator has been here from 1978 to now (2004). It has rabbit food, softener salt, and etc. How many years has it been there?

Solution: 26 years

Explanation: Extra Data – Read the question. Subtract 1978 from 2004.

Directions to next site: You walk straight across the street, until you reach Kieffers.

Kieffer’s

History: Ambrose and Juliana Kieffer owned the restaurant named Kieffer’s. Ambrose was named for his sausage making. They served sausage, pork, liver, wieners, headcheese, and summer sausage. They had to rebuild it three times with water problems. Ken and Ann Keiffer made their own catering service. Now they serve pizza, burgers, and chicken. There used to be a dance hall in it.

Problem: Evan and I went to Keiffers and bought a small pizza for $6.95 and two cokes for $1.00 each. We only had $11.00. How much would a small pizza and two cokes cost?

Solution: $7.95

Explanation: This is extra data problem. You don’t need to know that you had $11.00. You just add the pizza $6.95 and the coke $1.00 to get the answer, which is $7.95.

Directions to next site: Take about 30 steps to straight and take about 19 steps left to the Gas station.

Pump and Market

History:  The pump use to not have a gas pump. It use to be just a store and it was called Kasel’s. It also has the Vermillion Post Office inside. It changed to a gas station in 2000. John Kasel started in 1915. Paul Kasel owned it since 1973.

Problem: We collected the prices of gas  for three weeks (look at the graph). If unleaded cost $1.52 on the 4th week how much would plus and premium cost?

Solution:Premium would be $1.59,

plus would be $1.66

Explanation:  Look at the graph add 1.52 + .07=1.59 to get premium, add  1.59+.07=1.66

To next site: Go behind the Pump and Market to to pinkish-tanish house that was once a train station.

Train Station

History on the train depot:  This home used to be a train depot. You could ride to St. Paul on the train. You would have to pay 50 cents to ride it. Now the train depot is a house.

Problem: In 1866 the railroad was completed. But on October 2, 1910 it was struck by lightning and burned to the ground. About how many years was the depot used before it burned and had to be rebuilt?

Solution: 40 years

Explanation: Estimation Problem

Round 1866 to 1870. Take the year 1910 and subtract 1870 from it.

Directions to next site: You cross the road and head back toward Main Street. Go west to the church.

The Church

History: The church was built in 1914 and started on October 11, 1914. It was blessed by Reverend J. Lawler. The church was paid of in just 6 years. It and had an add-on in 1995.  Through out the years there have been a lot of priests.

Problem: Here are 5 first communion classes:

In 1907 there were 26 first communicants.

In 1917 there were 33 first communicants.

In 1961 there were 23 first communicants.

In 1982 there were 26 first communicants.

In 2001 there were 12 first communicants.

So find the range, mean, median and mode of the first communicants.

Solution: range: 19 mean: 24 median: 26   mode: 26

Explanation: Range is subtracting the largest and smallest number.

Mean is add all numbers and divide it by how many there are. Median is the middle number. Mode is if there are two numbers the same. (But not all ways)

Directions back to the school: Go across the street and that is the school. That’s the end.

St. John School

History: The School was built in 1957-1958 at the cost of 100,000 dollars. It was 1st-8th grade. Later on it became Preschool through 5th grade. The school is currently a one-story building. This summer we are adding on.

Problem:  The School is a three dimensional object. What shape is it?

Solution: Rectangular Prism

Explanation: A rectangular prism is a solid figure with 6 sides that are rectangles. The school is most like a rectangular prism.
