DeKalb County Math Trail: North DeKalb Mall

Elementary/Intermediate: What is the range, mode, median and mean of the heights of the heels on these shoes?
Elementary: Identify all of the parts of a circle that you can see here.

Intermediate: Make a good estimate of the amount of cloth used in upholstering the back of this chair.

Secondary: On the back of this cane chair are two arcs (ignoring the large circle which is the outline of the entire chair back).  Explain, with diagrams, what you would do in order to find the area of one of the sectors of the space between those two arcs (assume that the arcs are concentric).

Elementary: How many different ways could you spend $300 to buy the items listed here?

Intermediate: Based on the prices shown, what would you expect to see as the price for 1 carat diamond earrings?  Explain your answer.

Secondary: If the cost of a diamond ring is a linear function of its size, what would be the cost of the setting alone (that is, a "0 CT" diamond ring)?

Elementary/Intermediate: Suppose you and two friends have lunch here, and you get food from three different restaurants.  How many days could you do without repeating the combination of the three restaurants?

Secondary: Suppose you made these tables twice as large (in area).  If you want the same amount of space between tables as exists now, how many fewer tables would fit into this space?

Elementary/Intermediate: How many ways are there to buy two glasses that are not the same color and shape?

Secondary: Each of the glasses in the end row is shaped like a truncated cone.  How would you determine the height that cone would have if it were not truncated?

Elementary:  If two golf balls weigh 1/5 pound, and there are 50 pounds of golf balls in these two bins, how many golf balls are there?

Intermediate/Secondary: If you bought 20 golf balls for $5.80, how many of each type did you buy?

Elementary: What is the total volume of these bins?

Secondary: How much plastic could you save if you made these containers hemi-spherical, with the same volume they have now?

Elementary/Intermediate: If you expect to use 3000 weekend minutes and 700 other time minutes of air time on your cell phone each month, would you be better off with the $40 per month or the $70 per month plan?

Secondary: Is the number of anytime minutes a linear function of the price per month?  If not, change one number that would make it a linear function.

Elementary/Intermediate: Suppose you want to buy three different flowers.  If you choose from the flowers displayed here, how many different combinations could you make?  If you don't care whether or not they are all different, would that change your answer?  How?

Secondary: Same question as above, but you are choosing 10 flowers.

Elementary/Intermediate: Make a frequency chart of the head sizes represented by these hats, for either men or women.

Secondary: Suppose you had a hat factory, and you had to decide how many hats of each size to make.  If you do that by measuring a group of people, how many people would have to be in that group to give accurate results?  (You will have to decide exactly what "accurate results" means".)

Elementary/Intermediate: Decide which bottle of vitamin E is the best buy, and explain how you decided.
