DC Metro Train
How would you estimate how full a metro train is, as a percent where 100% means completely full?   If a group of 8 people choose from 12 seats that are close to each other, how many ways could they arrange themselves in those seats?

Do you think that more than half of the flag is white in color?   Why or why not?   If you look at the number of stars in each of the 10 diagonal rows, the pattern is 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 9, 7, 5, 3, 1, for a total of 50.   If there were only 8 diagonal rows with a similar pattern, how many stars would there be?   Make a table that shows the number of stars for 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14 diagonal rows in this pattern.   Then see if you can find an equation that tells the number of stars for a given number of rows.

How would you estimate how many leaves are on this section of sidewalk?   Is the row of trees on one side of the sidewalk exactly parallel to the row of trees on the other side?   How would you prove this?

Which number do you think is closest to the number of squirrels there are in the city of Washington DC: 100, 1,000, 10,000, 100,000, 1,000,000 or 10,000,000?   How could you find out if you are right?

    Suppose that:
a)      the radius of the outside circle on the wreath is one meter,
b)      the top of the arch is a semicircle of radius 2 meters,
c)      the arch is concentric with the wreath
d)      The outer support wires attach to the wreath at central angles of 60 degrees on each side of the center wire.

Find the length of each of the wires supporting the wreath.

Suppose you wanted to know how long, on the average, a cab at Union Station waits to get a passenger.   What data would you need to collect?   Suppose that between 6 am and midnight on a typical weekday, 600 people catch a cab at Union Station.   If 25% of them share the cab with only one other person, and 10% of them share a ride with exactly 2 other people, and the rest ride by themselves, how many times a day do cabs pick up passengers?

Draw a line of symmetry for the bell.   Suppose you needed to know how many degrees of an angle the clapper moves through as it goes from one side of the bell to the other. How could you use trigonometry to find out?

  Outside Union Station
How long did this person live?

How would you find out about how many bricks there are around this fountain?   How would you determine the area of the space around this fountain that is covered by bricks?

If all of these lines cross at the center of the circle, at what angle do you think two adjacent lines would meet?

  Capitol Building
Based on what you can see in this picture, how many pillars do you think there are in the front of the building and going around the dome?   This dome consists of two cylindrical shapes, with a hemispherical shape on top, and another small cylindrical shape on top of that.   What seven measurements would you need to make to find the total volume of all of that space?   Make a good guess as to what those measurements would be, and determine the volume that that would give you.
