Dr. Howard Seeherman Director-Equine Sports Medicine Program Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine Boston, Massachusetts |
Solution to problem (utilizing TI-83 calculator)
Dr. Seeherman is like the team doctor on a professional sports team except instead of treating football or basketball players, he takes care of horse athletes such as racehorses or show horses. One very important diagnostic tool that he uses is the equine treadmill. Many problems a racehorse will develop are only apparent at high exercise levels. On the treadmill the veterinarians can thoroughly examine an animal while it's running at top speed. Veterinary medicine is quite technical, and math and science are crucial, but Howard notes that his job is also about problem solving. "The animal can't really tell you what's wrong," he says, "so there is a lot of detective work involved its figuring out what's wrong and healing the animal that I enjoy the most."
