The Cotton Exchange was built in 1872, with the help of architect, Will G. Preston. Preston enjoyed the Queen Anne style of architecture and because of that the Cotton Exchange was made with red brick and stubby pilasters. The Cotton Exchange is the first building to be built on air rights. It needed to be built in this way so it could be near the cotton warehouses on River Street. This means that it was built over an existing street. The building cost forty million dollars. In 1880, the Cotton Exchange was called "The Wall Street of the South. "The Cotton Exchange is located on Bay Street and Factors' Walk. A large fountain, called The Gryphon, sits in front of the building. It is located inside an iron fence along with a historic marker which describes the history of the Cotton Exchange. It is now a meeting place for the membership of Solomon's Lodge Number One.
