River Street
On February 12th, 1733, General James Edward Oglethorpe landed on the banks of the Savannah River where City Hall is today. It was during this time that he began laying out plans for Savannah. Seeing that the Savannah River was a good place to build a wharf , he did and that is how River Street got started. Sometime in the 1970's the city remodeled the wharf so that it had many shops, restaurants, galleries, hotels and inns, which made River Street into an historical tourist area where many people could come and enjoy themselves. There is a wonderful walk along the river with benches and small parks. There are places where you can find pralines, pies, fudge, and much more. There are stores where you can buy beach clothes, sportswear, and casual shoes. The restaurants on River Street are probably the best part. River Street is a great place to visit the sites and have dinner.
