| The Scarborough House was built in 1819 for William Scarbrough, one of the owners of the "Savannah," the first steamship to cross the Atlantic Ocean. William Jay was the architect of the Scarbrough House. He made it an example of Greek Revival, one of the earliest in the South. The house was used as a public school from the 1870's to the 1950's. After being abandoned for twenty years, the house was restored by the Historic Savannah Foundation in the 1970's. Another twenty years passed before the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum made more renovations to the house in 1996-97. Presently, the museum resides in the Scarborough House.
