Fort Pulaski is a historic fort where amazing events took place during the Civil War. It is an example of a 19th century state-of-the-art architecture. It cost over one million dollars and took over eighteen years to build. It has an estimate of twenty-five million bricks. The fort was named after Count Casimir Pulaski , and Fort Pulaski was General Robert E. Lee's first military assignment. The fort was proclaimed a National Monument on October 15,1924, by the Presidential Proclamation. Fort Pulaski stands on Cockspur Island. Cockspur Island is fifteen miles off the coast of Savannah and is surrounded by marshland on the Georgia coast. It was first captured by Colonel Olmstead and his regiment of Confederate soldiers on January 1st, 1863. When the Union bombarded the fort with cannon balls, large holes were left in its wall. Some of the cannon balls still remain in the walls today. When Major General David Hunter captured Fort Pulaski, he declared that all the slaves in that area were free. These freed slaves became the first South Carolina Black Regiment of the U.S Army.
