Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church was organized in 1868 as a mission of the Methodist church. The Church first met in Chatham Academy, the present headquarters of the Savannah- Chatham Board of Education. The Trinity church bought property for the new church on the corner of Drayton and Gordon Street and the neighboring lot on Calhoun Square. The congregation was known as City Mission and the Second Methodist Church before the name Wesley Monumental Methodist Church was selected in 1875.

Although ground was broken on June 30,1875, the church was not finished until March 30, 1890, because of the many delays. The outside was completed in 1895 when the stucco was added to the brick. The towers and spires were also constructed at this time. The Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church has a Gothic Revival influence and is patterned after the Queen's Kirks in Amsterdam, Holland. The spires measure one-hundred and thirty-six feet and one-hundred and ninety-six feet in height. The inside of the church contains stain glass windows, which are dedicated to leading Methodists. At the front entrance is the Wesley Window. This window consists of life size busts of John and Charles Wesley. Above the window is a globe that contains John Wesley’s famous quote, "The world is my parish". In the front of the church, there are needlepoint kneeling pads. These were stitched by women of the congregation and have the same logo as the Wesley Window. These kneeling pads were dedicated on June 25, 2000. The sanctuary measures forty-three feet from floor to ceiling. The building has suffered from two fires, one in 1946 and the other in 1953. Both fires caused extensive damage but were contained due to a steel roof which was installed in 1902. Both of the fires were caused by lightning strikes. During the repairs, the congregation met at the Temple Mickve Israel. The 1953 reconstruction included redesigning the lower floor to include the Chapel of Memories. The church facilities also include an educational building which was dedicated on February 20, 1927.
