Summary

"The National Math Trail brings together a lot of elements that we know are important in teaching and learning," says Dave Hendry, who conceived of the Internet-based project. "It gets students working together, which is a vital job skill. is an important thing to learn how to do. It develops problem-solving skills by getting students not only to solve problems, but to formulate problems. It enables teachers to assess both their students' understanding of concepts and their acquisition of skills. It makes an abstract subject concrete by placing it within the context of the real world. And the icing on the cake is that it forwards the use of technology in a way that integrates naturally into curriculum objectives."

As teachers work towards the goal of preparing their students for life and work in the 21st century, they are becoming increasingly aware that an ability to solve complex problems is perhaps the most important skill one can learn. They are also realizing that a crucial aspect of this preparation is to show young people (and perhaps themselves as well) that the learning experience can and should be an enjoyable adventure.
