Hanson Farm

Hanson farm has been in the family for 89 years. It is a dairy farm located on Smith Hanson Rd. in the town of North Brookfield, Ma. We have 60 cows, 30calves, 1 rabbit, and 2 cats. There are 3 breeds of cows and they are dairy, beef, and dual. The dairy breeds are Holstein, Jersey, Guernsey, Ayshire, and Brown Swiss. The dual breeds are Devon and Scottish Highlander. The beef breeds are Hereford, Shorthorn, Angus, and Charolais. Dual are used for many of purposes such as beef, milk, and more.

At Hanson farm we have two kinds of dairy cows, which are Holstein and Jersey. Hanson farm is one of four farms left in North Brookfield. We feed the cows corn silage, grain, hay, corn meal, and grist mix. A cow chews 50 times per minute. Cows can see color. They stand up and lay down 14 times a day. They also can smell odor from six miles away. Cows can be these colors, red and white, red, black and white, brown, brown and white, and golden brown. A cow’s udder can hold between 25 and 50 pounds of milk.

One day the cows got out of the barn. We tried to chase them back into the barn, but one cow, named Parkay did not want to go. She jumped over the electric fence and walked around the manure pit. We tried to chase her the other way. She ended up jumping into the middle of the manure pit, and started swimming around. She then proudly climbed out herself and went into the barn with the other cows.
