The History of the New England Patriots

A group of local businessmen, led by executive William H. "Billy" Sullivan, Jr. brought professional football to New England on November 16, 1959. College football player Ron Burton was their first player, as was Gerhardt Schwedes, Ed McKeever was their first general manager, and Lou Saban as the team’s first head coach.

Thousands of names were submitted and the winning name "The Boston Patriots" was submitted by 74 fans. Shortly after the winning name was chosen, Boston Globe cartoonist Phil Bissell drew a cartoon of a Minuteman preparing to snap a football and owner Sullivan liked the cartoon so much he incorporated it as the team cartoon.

The team spent 10 years playing at 4 different sites, Boston University, Harvard University, Fenway Park, Alumni Stadium.

They found their own field, which was Foxboro Stadium.

Math Problems:

1. If the total amount of people that did not vote for the team name "The Boston Patriots" was half the amount of people that DID vote for that name, how many people voted in all?

2. The measurement of the New England Patriots’ field is 120 yards by 60 feet. What is the area of the football field? (hint: a yard equals 3 feet)

Solutions:

1. 111 people

2. 21,000 sq. feet
