The National Math Trail

North Brookfield Elementary School

Names: Julianne Caron and Elizabeth Bonnayer
Grades: 6th
Description: We chose the zoo because we both like animals. There were some interesting facts about the zoo. We chose 3 animals because it seemed easy for a problem. These 3 animals were also interesting.
Concepts: Algebra
Grade level 5th and 6th
Curriculum Framework Learning Standards 1) Interpret the multiple uses of numbers by taking real-world situations and translating them into numerical statements.
2) Model and discuss a variety of problem situations to help students move from the concrete to the abstract.
3) Use calculators in appropriate computational situations.
4) Discover how to form, then write, number sentences for real problems.
5) Investigate and describe ways to find missing components in number sentences.

ROGER WILLIAMS PARK ZOO:

About the Roger Williams National Memorial:

Roger Williams National memorial commemorates the life of the founder of Rhode Island. He founded Providence in 1636. The memorial is located on a common settlement of Providence and includes 4.5 acres of landscaped park.

2. The park is home to over 956 animals.

3. Rhode Island's # 1 outdoor tourist attraction.

4. General Zoo admission is $6.00 for adults and $3.50 for seniors 62+ and ages
    3-12

In 1871 Betsy Williams gave her 102 acre farm to the city of Providence for public use in loving memory of her great-grandfather, Roger Williams.

In 1872 a "menagerie" of small animals and birds were brought to a section of the park so visitors could get a closer look at wildlife. In the beginning the park covered little more than the present zoo grounds and Betsy’s Cottage. Providence "got" land from Cranston and in 1878 they had approved a comprehensive plan. In 1883, massive projects began to develop the Park as we know today. The menagerie building in 1890 opened showing off a wide variety of exotic animals and creatures. Later the building was a bird house but now is a gift shop.

Renovated and renamed in 1986, the Sophie Danforth Center is home to the Zoo’s administrative offices, veterinary hospital, the Rhode Island and Danforth Center are on the National Register of Historic Places.

The 1960s brought changes to Roger Williams Park and Zoo. In 1962 Sophie Danforth founded the Rhode Island Zoological society, as a nonprofit organization that provides financial and managerial support to the Zoo. In 1965, all the animals were moved inside a newly-fenced compound—this centralization greatly improved security, maintenance, and husbandry conditions. In 1978, the Zoo closed to embark upon a two-year upgrade project.

The three animals we are focusing on are the giraffe, the zebra, and the cheetah.

Our Math Problems:

Z= Zebra

C= Cheetah

The cheetah's life span is 12 years

G= Giraffe

The goal is to find out long the giraffe and the zebra live. To find out how long the zebra lives, do the first problem. To find how long the giraffe lives, do the second problem.

1. Z= C + 2, divided by 7, times 7, times 2.

2. G= C+ Z, divided by 8, times 5, + 1

Can you figure it out?¿?¿

Hint: To figure out the second problem you need to do the first.

º¿ºGOOD LUCKº¿º

Solution:

1. 12 + 2 = 14 ~/~ 7 = 2 x 7 = 14 x 2 = 28

2. 12 + 28 = 40 ~/~ 8 = 5 x 5 = 25 + 1 = 26
