Block By Block How Far Do We Walk?
By Amanda Cook and Amber Morey

Many students in the Upward Bound Program walk in between two main buildings each day, the Learning Resource Center and Blake Hall.  They wanted to know how many square feet each day they walk through between the buildings. We figured that the average student walks in between the two buildings about five times a day.  There are many blocks for the sidewalk between the two buildings, so we counted and came up with 44 blocks.  Each block is five by five feet.  All the blocks we counted are perfectly square.

We started counting at the front door of Learning Resource Center and ended at the door of  Blake Hall.

So how many square feet does an Upward Bound student walk through between the two buildings on an average day?

Answer:

Each block is five by five so it equals 25 feet squared. There are 44 blocks so 25 multiplied by 44 equals 1,100 feet squared. Then multiply it by the number of times an average student walks between the two buildings.

Equations:

Area of each block = 25 feet squared

How many blocks 44

44 times 25 = 1,100 feet squared

multiply by how many times they walk back and forth - 5

Then 1,100 times 5= 5500 feet squared

So an average student walks through about 5,500 feet squared back and forth between the two buildings on an average day.
