The Neon Delinquents
By: Autumn Everett & Shana Hollis
Five
students with an unlimited budget decide to paint the 8 tennis courts at FVCC hot
pink with orange lines.
Thinking ahead the students measured the courts and found the total area
of one court to be about 2802.871 ft. The
total area of the lines on one court was 43.348 ft.
Since the students did not have any of the paint or supplies they needed
for this project, they went to the local hardware store and found that a combo
pack (including a roller frame, roller cover, and a paint tray) costs $8.97.
They also found that a 1 ½” brush is $3.94 and one gallon of custom
colored, exterior paint, which covers 100 ft^2, costs $10.94.
You
must determine the total cost of supplies for the students; remember each
student needs a combo pack and brush. You also need to determine the
number of gallons of paint the students will need to cover all 8 courts if they
apply two coats of hot pink on each court, as well as two coats of orange on the
lines of each court. You should also find the cost of all the paint
combined and then find the grand total spent on paint and supplies.
Solution to The Neon Delinquents
To Paint One Entire Court
2802.871 ft / 100 ft = 28.02871 gal/court
round to 28 gal/court * 2 coats paint = 56
gal/court of pink paint
Cost: 56 gal * $10.94/gal = $612.64
To Paint White Lines on One Court
43.348 ft / 100 ft = .43348
round to .5 gal * 2 coats = 1 gal/court
orange paint
Cost: 1 gal * $10.94/gal = $10.94
Total Cost of Paint for One Court
56gal for entire court + 1gal for lines = 57gal total for each court
57gal * $10.94/gal paint = $623.58
Total Cost for all Eight Courts
$623.58 * 8 courts = $4988.64
Total Cost for Supplies
$8.97 combo + $3.94 brush = $12.91 supplies/person
$12.91 * 5 = $64.55
GRAND TOTAL
$4988.64 paint + $64.55 supplies = $5053.19
