Upward Bound is a college preparatory program that takes place at FVCC for six weeks each summer.  This program for high school students begins at the beginning of June and ends in mid July.  Upward Bound students participate in classes at the college on most days, but on occasion they travel. The Upward Bound has a large impact on the daily sales at the college bookstore and coffee stand.  We have collected data on days when UB was at the college and days when they were traveling.  This is the data we collected.

Using this data we were trying to conclude how great of an effect the UB students have on the Profit of the Bookstore and Coffee Stand.  We used our information to find what percent of the daily sales were due to UB students and compare it to days when they weren’t at the college.

Find the average percent of daily sales due to Upward Bound students.

How to Solve:

Coffee Stand

Here-gone=profit due to UB
$82.25-$67.25=$15

Final percent

15/82.25=0.18237
0.18237*100=18.24%

Bookstore

Here

$835.90+$586.31+$519.25=$1,941.46
$1,941.46/3=$647.15

Gone

$547.22+$258.78+$185.44=$991.44
$991.44/3=$330.48

Final percent

316.67/647.15=0.4893
0.4893*100=48.93%

This is a small sampling of data due to a limited number of days on which data could be gathered, so what other factors could impact the sales at the bookstore and the coffee stand?
