Andrew Carnegie

   Andrew Carnegie was a successful steel magnate of the nineteenth century.  He donated over $41 million to build libraries across the United States, 1,679 to be exact.  In 1899 two of Ohio's cities were the very first in Ohio to become a Carnegie library.  They were East Liverpool and Steubenville.  Carnegie liked the Ohio River and the cities were by the river. 109 libraries were built with the help of Carnegie in Ohio.  The earliest three libraries show a wonderful architectural idea.  With many towers and domes which were not approved or encouraged in later libraries after East Liverpool and Steubenville and of course Sandusky library.  Many of Carnegie's buildings are still standing today, these buildings were built to last, with the money given by Carnegie.

QUESTION:        If Andrew Carnegie gave $41 million to 1,679 libraries, about bow much did each library get?

SOLUTION:       Take 41 million and divide it by 1,679.  You should come up with about 2,441.

QUESTION:        How much would each library get if he gave 41 million to 2,000 libraries?

SOLUTION:        Take 41 million and divide it by 2,000.  You should get about $20,500.
