Flagpole

   The monument in front of the flagpole is in recognition of the firefighters, who have put their life on the line to protect our city.

   The monument was established in 1995.  It was built to keep in memory the firefighters that died in the line of duty in Sandusky County.  The area in which the monument stands was put there because Sandusky is the County Seat, and downtown Sandusky is the middle of Sandusky.

    There were 13 total firefighters to be put on the monument, 9 of which were from Sandusky County.  The first firefighter on the monument is a guy named John Unchrich, who died in a hold of a boat.  Many firefighters died from house or a theatre fire in the downtown area.  There were brothers who worked on the force together where one boy died by being thrown from a horse cart, the brother died from being kicked to death by a horse.  Another died from being crushed between 2 fire trucks.

    A fire captain, 65 years old, died from a house fire, and the one to find him was his own son.  His son soon became the captain, and then the fire chief.  A fire fighter in Bay view was on a rescue call to rescue someone from a septic tank, and died in the septic tank.  In 1969, a guy named William was at the Amvets volunteer center, when there was a fire, and a smoke stack crushed him to death.  The last 2 to die were from Perkins, in which they were electrocuted.  The memorial was held on April 22 1995.  There were over 1,500 people in attendance, 200 people of which were family members of the 13 that died.  There is a saying on the monument in which states, "All give some, and some gave all".

    The shadow of the flagpole in back of the monument is 264 in. tall.  The shadow of Mrs. Dayton who is standing right under the flagpole, is 86 in. tall.  Mrs. Dayton is really 62 in. tall.  How tall is the flagpole?

How to solve: Put X over 264 as in a fraction, then put 62 over 86 as another fraction.

Cross multiply (62 x 264) then divide by 86.

X= 190.32558 inches.
