Merritt Academy is a private school located outside of Washington, D.C. in Fairfax, Virginia. As a focal point for tourists, Washington D.C. has many monuments honoring our nations past. However the construction of these monuments has often brought about many controversies, the most recent of which is the construction of a new monument honoring all those who served in World War II.

To begin our math trail, we spent a day on the National Mall conducting a survey regarding the W.W.II monument and other possible honorees of future monuments. As we continued to move through DC, we also became aware of the math that surrounds our nations capital. In the classroom, we tallied the results of our survey and began to develop a math trail through Washington, DC.
