MATH TRAIL
# 8
In
our country we use two different systems to measure length. One system is called the ENGLISH
STANDARD SYSTEM and the other is the METRIC SYSTEM. The English Standard System uses
inches, feet, yards and miles to
measure length. There is no common
factor used to convert from one measurement to the other. The Metric System, which is used in most
countries, is based on factors, or
exponents, of ten. Measurements begin with millimeters,
then centimeters, then meters and then
kilometers. To get from one unit of
measurement to the other simply multiply or divide by a multiple of ten.
In
the English system 12 inches equals 1 foot;
3 feet equal 1 yard; and, 1760
yards equals one mile. In the Metric
system 10 millimeters equals 1 centimeter;
100 centimeters equals 1 meter; and,
100 meters equals 1 kilometer.
YOUR TASK:
This
colorful bulletin board is kept interesting with artwork created by students
taught by Robbie Holt, Double Churches’ art instructor. Double Churches’ students frequently show and place in local and
regional art exhibitions, as well as,
show and place in the Georgia PTA’s
Reflections program. Using a
ruler or meter tape measure the length and width of this bulletin board in both
English Standard and Metric measurements.
Make sure to measure in inches, feet and yards, as well as, millimeters, centimeters and meters. Did you
discover how much easier it is to measure in the metric system? If you measure in the metric system it is
easy to convert one measurement, say centimeters, to millimeters or meters
without using a calculator. To convert
centimeters to millimeters multiply the number by 100. To convert from centimeters to meters divide
the measurement by 100.
