Rio- Niterói Bridge

The distance between Rio de Janeiro and Niteroi, two cities of Rio de Janeiro State, is 14km.  Since 1875, a connection between Rio and Niterói had been pursued.

The bridge today substitutes the ferriers and their daily one hour trips. It also substitutes the trip by car or bus around the bay through Magé, a distance of approximately 100 km.

The construction began in November 9th, 1968 with the presence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh, and minister Mario Andreazza.

In the twenty-five years since its inauguration, the President Costa e Silva Bridge has become a mark of Brazilian engineering. The bridge contains 18 ramps and is 14 km of length.

Problem:

 The bridge’s length is 14km.

A car is traveling from Rio to Niterói  at a speed of 100km/h.

A truck is traveling from Niterói to Rio at a speed of 60km/h.

If they start at the same time, how long will it take them to meet?

Solution:  As D =r. t (Distance = rate . time)

A+ B= 14

A= the path made by the car

B= the path made by the truck

A= 100 x time

B= 60 x time

100t + 60t= 14

160t = 14

t=14:160

t= 5 min and 15 sec.

The two cars will meet after 5 minutes and 15 seconds
