Our Lady of Mercy American School
Message from the Superintendent
Dr. Charles R. Lyndaker Ph.D.

We are the only Catholic American School of Rio de Janeiro and have been serving the Catholic, English speaking population for over 45 years. We are sponsored by the Society of Our Lady of Mercy which has been in Rio de Janeiro since 1919. The school is dedicated to Catholic and American principles and philosophies of education. It is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) of the United States and also by the local Brazilian authorities. For these reasons, Our Lady Mercy School offers two diplomas upon graduation.

We have a student body of around 450 students from 23 different nations. Currently our largest group is from Brazil itself. We approach education from a constructivist perspective allowing our students to develop their own manners to organize information and to apply such.

Our Lady of Mercy is located in an urban setting with the Christ Statue, "Corcovado", directly over our shoulders. We are able to see the city’s rain forest and we are just five minutes away from Copacabana and Ipanema beaches.

Our Lady of Mercy School is very concerned that her students have a clear understanding of their roles in society and their responsibilities to their society. For this reason, a highly structured Community Service Program is maintained that culminates in the High School with 100 hours of community service for each graduating senior.
