Assignment: Brazilian Social Studies and Math Project

Maracanã is located in the neighborhood of Vila Isabel, Rio de Janeiro.

The word Maracanã originated from a Brazilian bird, but its official name is “Mario Filho Stadium”. One of the largest stadiums of the world, it was built in 1950, to hold that year’s World Cup. Nowadays Maracanã is a cultural attraction and one of the main tourist points in Rio de Janeiro. Maracanã’s maximum capacity now is 100,000, although originally held 190,000 people. It was also used for important shows hosted by famous people and events such as: Frank Sinatra, Paul Mc Cartney , Madonna and the Papal Mass in 1980. Famous soccer star Pelé scored his one thousandth goal there. Maracanã was picked for this project due to its size and importance as a monument in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Mathematical Problem

Maracanã’s circumference is 2.5 kilometers. Two men, Raphael and Joe, run two laps around the stadium with Raphael going at a speed of 10km/h and Joe at a speed of 5km/h. How many minutes before Joe will Raphael finish the 2 laps?

Solution

As D= rt, then:

Raphael:    5 = 10.t  ;   t= 0.5 hours or 30 minutes.

So Raphael ends the two laps in 30 min.

Joe:           5 = 5.t  ; t = 1 hour or 60 minutes

So Joe ends the two laps in 1 hour

Over all solution = Raphael ends the 2 laps 30 minutes earlier then Joe.
