The Village of Granville is sheltered in the Welsh Hills of central Ohio and reminds travelers of New England. Settled in 1805 by a company of men, women, and children from Granville, Massachusetts, Granville, Ohio still retains the wide tree-lined streets laid out by its founders.
In 1868, Alliaria petiolata, or garlic mustard, was introduced to the United States on Long Island, New York. It is an exotic species from European areas and was thought to have been brought over by settlers for supposed medicinal properties and cooking. It kills off native plants and animals, and is now invading large areas of the U.S., including our town, Granville. We have recorded the number of garlic mustard in four one foot square quadrants on Sugar Loaf hill, a park in our town which was established in 1805 as a sandstone quarry. Many of the older houses in Granville have sandstone foundation. It is now a public park.
Problem: How many garlic mustard plants are on Sugar Loaf?
1. Find the average number of plants per square foot, by
adding the number of plants in each quadrant, and dividing
by four.
Quadrant #1: 6 plants
Quadrant #2: 1 plant
Quadrant #3: 8 plants
Quadrant #4: 10 plants
2. Find the surface area of Sugar Loaf. Use the formula,
prs, where r= radius, and s= slant height. Use 3.14 for
pi. The slant height of Sugar Loaf is 495.2 feet, and the
radius is 485 feet.
3. Lastly, multiply the number of plants per square foot
by the surface area of Sugar Loaf for the number of plants
on Sugar Loaf.
Answer: The surface area of Sugar Loaf is 754,140.08, and the average number of plants per square foot is 6.25. the total number of garlic mustard plants on Sugar Loaf is about 4,713,375.5.
This is the Guanciale & Johnson sign outside of their store in downtown Granville. It is shaped like a triangular prism. If they wanted to have a new awning made to fit the current space, how much material would be needed? Assume the sign section in front is a continued piece of material from the slanted top that is cut to hang down. The 2 pieces from the sides are tucked under and stitched to hold down the imprinted section.
Answer. Since the surface area of this triangular prism is needed we find the slant height using the Pythagorean theorem. Since this is a 3,4,5 triangle the slant height would be 5 feet. The top section is 3'x 5' and the two side sections are ½ x 3'x 4' for a total of 27 square feet.
The History of the Granville Public Library
The original Granville Public Library System was founded in November 1805. The founders had provided for the library before they left Granville, OH by appointing a committee to receive subscriptions and form a constitution. The title of the library company was The Granville Alexandrian Society and received a charter in 1807. The current library was built in 1924 and was added on to in 1963.
The math problem concerns how many hours the library is open to the public in a non leap year? We used 52 weeks to find the total.
Answer: Adding the hours per week shown on the doorway to the library we came up with 66. Multiplying 52 weeks by 66 hours/week we arrived at 3432 hours per year that the library is open to the public.
Broadway
The original settlers from Granville, OH did extensive preplanning and wanted their main street to be very wide to accommodate various horses and buggies. So they built a road that was quite broad and hence the name of our main street through town is Broadway. It is wide enough to have pull in parking on both sides and 4 lanes of traffic.
Our speed limit is 25mph in town and 35mph in more rural areas of the village. What is the maximum feet/second you could be traveling in town and on the rural roads?
