San Antonio
Institute of Texas Cultures

Kelli, Rebecca, Jaime, Francisco

A few days ago our math class took a trip to the Institute of Texan Cultures. When we walked in, we saw a very huge, neon Texas flag. Our group thought that it was really cool. Texans are very proud of their state. Some of the things we are proud of are: the missions, the River Walk, and our state flag. That's right we are very proud of our Texas flag!

Neon Flag

Math Problem: Find the area of the entire neon Texas flag, if the height is 10 feet and the length is 20 feet. After you have found the area subtract the area of the red rectangular portion, if the height of that portion is 5 feet and the length is 15 feet.

Solution: Find the area of the whole rectangle (the flag). Then find the area of the red rectangle and subtract that from the area of the whole flag.

Our 8th grade team took a trip to the Texas Institute of Texan Culture. There, we saw a very old post office, like they had back in the old days. Back then, to mail an envelope it cost $.03 a stamp. Now, it cost $.33 for a stamp.

Math Problem: Franni wants to mail her grandma a box of goodies for her birthday. The box and its contents weigh 5.61 pounds. The first pound is $1.50 and each additional pound is $1.00. How much would it be to mail the cat?

Solution:
To find the price for the package to be mailed, you check to see how much each pound costs. It says above how much it would be.
