SPOKANE, WASHINGTON BLOOMSDAY PROBLEM

Spokane, located in the eastern part of Washington state, is the second largest city with a population of 182,000. Known as the Lilac City, Spokane hosted the 1974 World’s Fair, and its downtown went through a major renovation. In 1977, Spokane resident and former Olympic marathoner Don Kardong, suggested a road race through downtown, and with 1400 registered runners, Bloomsday began. Held the first Sunday in May, Bloomsday is now the second largest road race in America. Attracting world-class runners, Bloomsday is also open to all ages and abilities. Participation in Bloomsday peaked in 1996 with 61,298 runners.

PROBLEM:

Bloomsday 2000 is the 24th running of the race. The chart below lists the number of runners who registered and who finished Bloomsday. Find the percentage of runners who finished the race compared to the number that registered and see if there is a trend:

Does the percentage of runners finishing the race: increase, decrease, or stay about the same? Does the percent finishing change if the registered amount is greater or less? What year had the highest percentage of finishers?
